HGST / Western Digital Ultrastar Data JBOD Storage Enclosure
The HGST / Western Digital Ultrastar Data is a high-density enterprise SAS JBOD storage platform designed for large-scale storage capacity growth in data center and software-defined storage environments. Unlike iSCSI or controller-based storage arrays, the Ultrastar Data operates as a direct-attached SAS expansion shelf, relying on external servers or RAID/HBA controllers for storage management. Requires no proprietary base array — connects to any host system equipped with a standard SAS HBA or RAID controller via mini-SAS HD cabling, and supports daisy chaining for further expansion.
Highlights
- Ultra-Dense 4U Chassis: Houses 102 hot-swappable 3.5" drive bays in a 4U rackmount form factor, delivering high-density enterprise storage expansion for data center environments.
- 12Gb/s SAS Expansion Architecture: Equipped with Dual SAS I/O Modules (IOMs) providing twelve mini-SAS HD ports (six per IOM) for high-speed external SAS connectivity via host HBA or RAID controller, with dual-path redundancy and failover support.
- Drive Compatibility Flexibility: Supports 12Gb/s SAS and 6Gb/s SATA hard drives across all 102 bays, with hybrid SSD acceleration-tier support in up to 24 of the drive slots, enabling scalable capacity configurations for performance, archival, or mixed workload storage deployments.
- Carrier-Grade Redundancy: Features dual redundant SAS I/O Modules (IOMs), redundant 1800W hot-swappable 80 PLUS Platinum power supplies, and hot-swappable fan modules to ensure continuous operation with no single point of failure.
- Advanced Enclosure Management: Supports SES (SCSI Enclosure Services) for real-time health monitoring, including temperature, power status, and drive activity visibility through the connected host system, plus dual Ethernet ports for out-of-band management.
- High-Line Power Required: Operates on 200–240VAC input only. This enclosure will not function on a standard 120V outlet — on low-line power the enclosure will power on but the drives will not spin up.
Applications
- Enterprise Data Centers: High-density SAS storage expansion for server environments
- Backup & Archival: Reliable long-term storage for backups and data retention
- Software-Defined Storage: Disaggregated and SDS deployments requiring dense shared HDD capacity
- Big Data & Analytics: Scalable petabyte-class storage for large datasets and processing workloads
- Media & Surveillance Storage: High-capacity storage for video production and security systems

We test every storage expansion system before you do.
Every storage expansion system Server Part Deals sells passes an internal 4-stage testing protocol before it ships. While many resellers stop at a basic power-on check, we validate drive-bay connectivity, controller communication, power delivery, cooling, and sustained data transfer. Each system is tested to confirm reliable operation and compatibility with its listed specifications.
Stage 1: Physical Inspection
- Chassis and structural inspection
- Drive-bay and caddy alignment check
- Data, power, and management-port inspection
- Fan, cable, and power-supply inspection
Stage 2: Hardware Validation
- Backplane and controller detection
- Drive-bay connectivity verification
- Expansion-module and firmware review
- Fan and power-supply status check
Stage 3: Performance Testing
- Multi-drive read/write cycles
- Interface and link-speed validation
- Concurrent bay-load testing
- Sustained throughput benchmarking
Stage 4: Stability & Connectivity Testing
- Full-bay connectivity scan
- Link-error and disconnect monitoring
- Temperature and airflow verification
- Final configuration and inventory check
